Stalking the Pump

Crawling, creeping through the grass,
an orange tom cat's tail stays erect.
He's stalking his prey,
a wild shrew.

He leans forward on his belly,
ready to pounce,
Like a torpedo,
he launches from the grass

His prize is nowhere to be seen.
Only three red gas pumps
and a tall, slender man.

The cat was confused.
Where was his shrew?
Possible the sent was masked by gasoline?
Possible.

The man looked at the confused creature
then knelt down.
"Here kitty, kitty."
His hands covered in black grease.

The tom cat was unsure,
this man was unfamiliar,
he smelled chemical,
though he seemed friendly.

The cat approached with caution.
"There you go buddy"
The man said softly
The cat felt reassured.

The man slowly reached around to his pocket,
pulling out a couple strands of jerky.
He offered them to the cat.
Once again, the cat became confused.

"Here, bud. Hungry?"
The cat looked, smelled the meat
the seasoning over powered the gas,
He wanted it

He lunged forward
and took it in his paws,
The man chuckled,
as he watched the Tom cat disappear into the bushes.

  1. What a sweet scene. This reminds me of the skittish stray kitty who was living behind our house but after lots of patient coaxing by us now lives on our back patio. We got him a little heated house and he is so loving and affectionate. Still a little jumpy though, just like the tom cat you've described here.

  2. Hi, Emma!
I loved how you gave the cat a real personality. I also loved the way you made the cat realistic. I was impressed with the way you were able to give the man a personality with just a few words in the story. And I love how well you were able to paint this picture. It went along perfectly with the image.
